let the good times roll: Safely navigating mardi gras mayhem

February 24, 2025

It's the season for king cakes, parades, parties, and libations! With thousands of locals and tourists flooding the streets, there’s nothing quite like Mardi Gras. Unfortunately, the uptick in excitement brings plenty of accidents and injuries.

For Drivers: Be the King of your Commute

  1. Know Your Route

    1. Parades bring thousands of partygoers into an area. It's important to be aware of road closures and parking situations for a safe arrival and exit.

      1. Make use of navigation apps like Waze for real-time directions on traffic and road closures.

      2. Be aware of your surroundings when arriving and leaving your parking spot.

      3. Have a designated driver or make plans to use a rideshare service.

  2. Eyes on the Drive

    1. Tourists and locals will be out and about often ignoring traffic laws. Give extra attention to little partygoers, bikes, and those who have over-indulged in the season.

    2. Texting or filming behind the wheel isn’t just dangerous, it could be the evidence that makes you liable in an accident.

  3. Party in Moderation

    1. Law enforcement will be out in force to protect you and everyone else out for Mardi Gras throws.

    2. Know your limit and stick to it. A DUI won't just ruin your night, it could cost you your license, your freedom, or someone's life.

For Pedestrians: Mardi Gras Mambo Safely

  1. Know Your Area

    1. Be aware of your surroundings. Walk on sidewalks, stay out of the path of the parade, and cross at crosswalks and street corners.

    2. Never assume a driver sees you. With alcohol, distractions, and changes to traffic light operations and street closures, this isn't a normal day.

  2. Steer Clear of Floats and Parade Vehicles

    1. Floats have massive blind spots and drivers can't be aware of everything considering the loud music and celebrations. Give all vehicles a wide berth. No bead, doubloon, or cup is worth a trip to the ER.

    2. If an injury does occur, report it immediately and gather witness information if you are able.

  3. Watch for Drunk Drivers

    1. Just because you're not behind the wheel doesn't mean you're not subject to an encounter with a drunk driver. Drunk driving accidents often involve innocent pedestrians.

    2. If you suspect a driver is intoxicated, get to a safe area and report it. You may just save a life, including that of the drunk driver.

If You’re in an Accident, Here’s What to Do

Even with the best precautions, accidents happen. If you’re involved in a crash during Mardi Gras:

  1. Call 911 Immediately: Police reports are crucial for insurance claims and legal action.

  2. Take Photos & Gather Witness Info: Crowd distractions mean details get lost fast.

  3. Seek Medical Attention: Adrenaline and alcohol can mask injuries. Get checked out as soon as possible.

  4. Call an Attorney: Insurance companies love to lowball claims, regardless of the occasion. A tough lawyer can make sure you get what you deserve.
